Carcass ultrasound gives Canadian beef producers solid carcass information without waiting until the cattle are on the rail. By measuring ribeye area, backfat, and marbling, ultrasound helps take the guesswork out of breeding, culling, and marketing decisions. It allows producers to better hit Canadian grading targets, improve carcass consistency, and build a herd that fits what today’s market is paying for.

After scanning

After the images are interpreted, the measurements are reported to the appropriate breed association(s) for processing. Ultrasound record processing follows the same format used for weight traits within performance programs. Breeders receive the ultrasound measurements (adjustments and contemporary group ratios) as a part of the program.

Beef ultrasound measurements collected for each animal include:

  • Rump fat thickness

  • 12-13th rib fat thickness

  • Ribeye area

  • Percentage intramuscular fat (marbling)

Results from CupLab come in usually 3-6 days

Results that matter

I work closely with your Cattle Breed Association

Here is the process

  • The breeder notifies the breed association of intentions to scan a contemporary group of animals.

  • The breed association sends the breeder a barnsheet including information on the contemporary group.

  • The technician scans the cattle and submits the images to CUP Lab for processing.

  • CUP Lab will invoice the breeder

  • The processing results are forwarded to the breed association by CUP for adding adjustment factors and computing within contemporary group ratios and EPDs.

  • The breed association or CUP Lab sends the final results to the breeder.

  • The breed association also includes the data into their database for use in genetic evaluations.

  • Questions by the breeder after receiving the final results can be directed to the field technician, breed association, or back to CUP.

No more guessing, one scan & you'll know everything...
